So, finally we're writing about our stay in the sunshine state in the US! After the nice weekend in Salt Lake City we took the plane to San Francisco Monday morning and arrived to SF early afternoon. We were lucky enough to get a host from Couchsurfing so he advised us how to get to his place from the airport. We took the BART to downtown and then the bus. What really stuck us weird first arriving was the heat! Everyone had told us that "Beware, San Fran is frisky because of the wind!" but the wind had gone missing that day. The sun was shining, the air was hot and we were carrying our backpacks in the public transit all the while sweating our butts off. Thankfully we found the place and our host, Larry, a retired man who had a bright blue beard! He was a fun character, very open-minded and hospitable, and we had a lot of fun chilling with Larry. 

After getting settled at Larry's, we went walking about first in Haight Ashbury and then in the Golden Gate park. Haight Ashbury was this awesome hippie-vibed street with lots of thrift shops, Nepalese souvenir shops, and all kinds of "alternative" boutiques. It was so much fun to wander on that street that we went back there again during the week. Golden Gate park on the other hand is a huge park, so we only got time to do half of it (as there were sketchy people in the park and it was getting dark).

The next few days we really went sightseeing. First up was the fabulous Castro district which was quite amazing! It was lively and colorful with a giant rainbow flag identifying it as The Village. There are some interesting shops and clubs there if you're into that :D From there we went downtown through Mission district which is this very infamous area in SF (at least by night). We took the world-known streetcars to Fisherman's Wharf where we saw the prison Alcatraz from afar from Pier 49. We also went to a free museum of old mechanical toys and gadgets, Le Musée Mecanique, where Laura played pinball for a while (like 6 seconds because it swallowed her coins and didn't give more tries if the ball went straight in like in Finland...she was pissed.) We then went walking around the pier and saw Pier 39 with the sea lions bathing in the sun. The area is very touristy but if you're in SF you should see it.

We had discussed with our host Larry about us wanting to go see the Redwoods in Muir Woods National park and he was really interested in that as well so on Thursday he decided to take us to the park but on another route. If you go the normal way into Muir Woods you pay an entrance fee of 7 dollars, so Larry (and us) didn't want to pay that fee which meant that we would go from the back of the Woods. That is actually allowed as they say that if you hike in the woods and end up in the National park from the back you can stay there without paying the fee. With Larry we tried out a hiking path he hadn't tried yet and had a lovely hike in the park till we got to Muir Woods. The national park was amazing! The trees were majestic, beautiful and ancient, and the experience was almost holy. It felt like being in a cathedral, you don't talk out loud respecting the surroundings. After walking around for a while, we started to head back again. When we got back to the car, Larry drove us to a summit where you could see San Francisco and Oakland from high up and see the whole bay. It was beautiful. And the day didn't finish there yet, even after that he took us to a Golden Gate lookout point where we got to see the whole of the gate from afar. So we had a full day of seeing truly the best side of SF and it was all thanks to our host Larry and his hospitality! Once we got back to the city, we went to eat in a Thai restaurant and invited Larry for a good meal as he was so kind to us. All in all, that was probably the best day in SF!

The end of the weekend we didn't do a lot of new and exciting stuff, but Friday night we did go to this free charity meal thing at a church in Mission. We saw this in the website sf.funcheap.com where you can see everything that is going on that day in the city for a cheap price or for free. This was a meal organized in a church and you could also volunteer to help out or bring food. We did this with another couchsurfer and with Larry and even though we felt as if we were taking advantage of the free meal, the people were happy that we were there and they had cooked a lot of food. It was surprising that the place wasn't full and they actually had a lot of leftover, so that made us feel less uncomfortable. For backpackers having little money, this is a good way to eat a full meal and repay it by washing dishes or cleaning or whatever. After the dinner we went to a free gallery opening too where you could see different kind of art and talk with the artists. This was a fun night with a real San Francisco feel to it!

During the weekend we moved from Larry's place to Johanna's place, a new CS host originally from Portugal. The day we spent in the city alone, saw the Cable Car Museum and walked around, and then the evening we went to a bar with Johanna and got to know her better. Our stay at her place was very short though as we left towards LA to other adventures the next morning. We are so grateful to our two great hosts in SF and definitely made our stay there better than we would have hoped for!

LOS ANGELES

We arrived in LA quite late at night while there was the eclipse of the moon in the dark sky. It was a strange feeling to be in this new big city but luckily we had a place to stay as Heli, Laura's cousin from Boulder, had arranged us a place through her contacts. We had no idea who we were going to meet but we were optimistic. When we finally got there, we met Cole, Carley, Georgie and Josh, and they are amazing people! We had actually thought that they were people in their thirties but they were around our age, and living in an old hotel near Venice Beach that had been modified into apartments. We had the most amazing time with them and our time in LA would not have been half as awesome as it were with them!

During our visit we mostly visited the beach and spent one day in Hollywood where we saw the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Chinese Theater and the Hollywood sign. It was nice but quite enough for us. LA isn't a city where you would like to spend a lot of time in unless you're making a career or have something to actually do there. Venice Beach was great whilst it was qwerky and had a lot of weird/special/extrovert/interesting people there. We also saw the Santa Monica pier with Cole and Carley which was extremely nice, the area is quite beautiful and the pier is cute. One night in LA we went to Malibu Beach and had a great bonfire, making s'mores, drinking wine, swimming in the moonlit ocean and spending time with our new friends. One of the best memories of the US!

Spending time with our new friends in LA really made our trip there worth it and it has a special place in our hearts (sounds cheesy but that's how we feel!) We mostly wanted to hang out with them than to visit the city OR visit the city with them :D. On our last night there we went to see the sunset at the Griffith Park Observatory and then went to eat amazing pizza at Grey Block where Josh worked at. Such a lovely time in LA that we almost felt sad to leave to Fiji! We're truly hoping to stay in touch with these beautiful people and meet them again somewhere, maybe even in Finland!

Kalifornia!

Noniin, olimme Kaliforniassa jo kuukausi sitten, mutta eipä ole tullut kirjoitettua siitä. Lähdimme siis Salt Lake Citystä aamulennolla kohti San Franciscoa ja aurinkoista Kaliforniaa. Onneksi löysimme aivan viime tipassa sohvasurffausisännän, koska San Francisco on melko kallis paikka. Lentokentältä meidän piti matkustaa BART-junalla (kallis juna!) lähemmäs keskustaa ja sitten vielä vaihtaa bussiin, joka vei isäntämme luo. Isäntämme nimi oli Larry ja hän oli kuusikymppinen eläkeläismies, jolla oli sininen parta! Hän isännöi monia surffaajia tilavassa kodissaan keskeisellä paikalla San Franciscossa ja hänen parvekkeeltaan oli upeat näkymät kaupungin yli. Larry oli hauskaa seuraa ja vietimme hänen luonaan kuusi yötä.

Saapuessamme San Franciscoon yllätyimme helleaallosta, joka ei tuntunut kovin miellyttävältä rinkkoja kantaessa. Päivä oli kuulemma poikkeuksellisen kuuma, ja meitä olikin varoitettu San Franciscon yllättävän kylmästä tuulesta. Saimmekin kokea tuulen nahoissamme useampaan otteeseen, kun emme ottaneet takkeja mukaan kaupunkikierroksille. Silloin kun takit olivat mukana, oli tietysti liian kuuma...

Ensimmäisenä päivänämme tutustuimme Haight Ashburyn hippikatuun, joka sijaitsi kävelymatkan päässä yöpaikastamme. Katu oli täynnä värikkäitä rakennuksia ja mukavia hippikauppoja. Kadulla oli mukavaa vain kävellä ja katsella ympärilleen. Kadun päässä alkoi Golden Gate -puisto, joka oli San Franciscon oma versio New Yorkin keskuspuistosta. Puisto oli siis iso ja viihtyisä lenkkipolkuineen ja museoineen. Puisto on kiva paikka iltakävelylle auringonlaskun aikaan.

Seuraavina päivinä näimme joitain San Franciscon tunnettuja kaupunginosia, kuten Castron sateenkaarialueen, Mission-baarialueen ja Fisherman's Wharfin, joka on pohjoisrannalla oleva satama. Satamasta lähtevät lautat Alcatraz-vankilaan, jossa emme valitettavasti käyneet, koska liput olivat loppuunmyyty koko viikolle. Satamassa on mukavia kauppoja ja hauska pelimuseo, joka on täynnä ikivanhoja pelikoneita. Satamassa voi nähdä myös merileijonia paistattelemassa laitureilla! Fisherman's Wharfissa on mukava tunnelma, vaikka se onkin San Franciscon turistirysä.

Yhtenä päivänä halusimme mennä kaupungin ulkopuolelle Muir Woodsin punapuumetsään, jossa sijaitsevat maailman korkeimmat puut. Punapuut ovat uskomattoman korkeita ja leveitä, ja ne ovat hirvittävän vanhoja. Metsä on niin hieno, että ei auta muu kuin pysähtyä ja katsella puita kaikessa hiljaisuudessa. Muir Woodsiin voi mennä yhteiskuljetuksella San Franciscosta, mutta syksyllä kuljetus on toiminnassa vain viikonloppuisin. Paikallisbussit kulkevat myös arkisin, mutta matkaan menee pari tuntia yhteen suuntaan. Onneksemme Larry oli myös kiinnostunut lähtemään punapuumetsään, joten pääsimme hänen kyydillään paikalle. Metsä on kansallispuistoaluetta, joten siellä peritään 7 taalan sisäänpääsymaksu. Jos ei halua maksaa, alueelle voi patikoida muutaman kilometrin matkan puiston takaa. Mehän emme tietenkään halunneet maksaa, joten ajoimme puiston ohi pohjoiseen, jätimme auton parkkipaikalle ja kävelimme vajaat 40 minuuttia metsäpolkuja kansallispuistoon. Larry oli siis myös kiinnostunut vaihtoehtoisista patikointireiteistä, joten emme pelkkää pihiyttämme valinneet kyseistä reittiä. Netistä löytyy erilaisia ohjeita, miten päästä polkuja pitkin puistoon. Reitti oli melko helppo ja mielenkiintoinen. Oli hauskaa tutustua metsään ja viettää päivä yhdessä patikoiden. Muir Woods on aivan uskomaton! Metsä tuntui melkein pyhältä paikalta, jossa voi hiljentyä ja kunnioittaa luontoa. Pyörimme aikamme puiden keskellä ja sitten lähdimme patikoimaan takaisin päin eri reittiä. Autolle päästyämme Larry vei meidät vielä kukkulalle, jonka huipulta näkee hienosti koko San Franciscon ja Oaklandin kaupungit. Paluumatkalla pysähdyimme myös Golden Gate -sillan näköala-alueella ottamassa kuvia kuuluisasta sillasta ja katselemassa sen kaunista punaista pintaa auringonlaskua vasten. Kävimme vielä illan päätteeksi thairavintolassa syömässä ja tarjosimme Larrylle aterian kiitokseksi. Tämä kyseinen päivä oli kaikista paras San Franciscossa, kiitos Larryn vieraanvaraisuuden!

Loppuviikolla emme tehneet juurikaan mitään ihmeellistä. Tosin perjantai-iltana koimme taas Larryn kanssa jännän kokemuksen, kun menimme Mission-kaupunginosaan erääseen kirkkoon ilmaiselle illalliselle. Olimme löytäneet kyseisen ruokatapahtuman San Franciscon ilmaisten tapahtumien nettisivulta (sf.funcheap.com) ja päätimme mennä kokeilemaan. Kirkko siis järjesti ruokatapahtuman, jonne vapaaehtoiset olivat tehneet kasoittain ruokaa kauppojen ylijäämäelintarvikkeista ja lähinnä kodittomat saivat tulla syömään ruokaa. Kaikki olivat kylläkin tervetulleita, mutta meillä oli ehkä vähän epämukava olo, kun menimme sinne syömään ilmaista ruokaa. Paikka ei ollut kuitenkaan täynnä ja ruokaa oli paljon, joten vapaaehtoiset toivottivat meidät ilomielin vastaan. Heidän tekemänsä ruoka oli todella hyvää!! Se oli muuten täysin kasvisruokaa :). Kannattaa katsoa tuolta nettisivulta hyviä tapahtumia ja tarjouksia, koska reppureissaajalle kaikki ilmaiset asiat ovat aina plussaa. Illallisen jälkeen menimme vielä ilmaiseen galleria-avajaisiin, jossa taiteilijat esittelivät töitään omissa työpajoissaan.

Viikonloppuna muutimme viimeiseksi yöksi uuden sohvasurffausemännän, Johannan luo. Hän oli portugalilainen, joka muutti San Franciscoon muutama vuosi sitten. Vietimme päivän keskenämme kaupungilla pyörien, ja kävimme raitiovaunumuseossa, joka oli todella mielenkiintoinen (ja ilmainen). Illalla menimme Johannan kanssa lähistöllä olevaan baariin tutustumaan häneen enemmän. Vaikka olimme Johannan luona vain yhden yön, meillä oli hauskaa yhdessä ja hän oli todella mukava ja sydämellinen ihminen. Olimme onnekkaita, kun onnistuimme saamaan koko San Franciscon ajalle sohvasurffauspaikat, sillä siten koimme kaupunkia eri tavalla ja tutustuimme muihin ihmisiin. Sitten olikin aika lähteä kohti eteläistä Kaliforniaa...

LOS ANGELES

Sunnuntaina lähdimme bussilla Los Angelesiin ja matka kesti kahdeksan tuntia. Saavuimme illalla LA:han juuri kuunpimennyksen aikaan. Oli outoa ja ehkä vähän pelottavaa olla niin suuressa kaupungissa pimeällä, mutta onneksi meillä oli yöpaikka tuttujen luona. Tai emme oikeastaan tunteneet heitä ollenkaan, sillä Heli, Lauran sukulainen Boulderista, oli järjestänyt meille yöpaikan asiakkaansa pojan luota Venice Beachilta. Suunnistimme näiden uusien tuttavuuksien luo rinkkojemme kanssa ja onneksemme he osoittautuivat mahtaviksi tyypeiksi ja meillä oli todella hauskat neljä päivää heidän kanssaan! Luulimme heidän olevan jotain kolmekymppisiä kalkkiksia, mutta he olivatkin nuoria ja hauskoja ihmisiä, joiden kanssa meillä oli paljon yhteistä. Isäntämme olivat siis Cole, Carley, Georgie ja Josh, ja he asuivat vanhassa hotellissa kimppakämpässä aivan Tyynenmeren tuntumassa. Paikka ei olisi voinut olla hienompi! Kävimme joka päivä kävelemässä Venice Beachin rantakatua, joka oli täynnä turistikauppoja. Santa Monica oli myös lähellä ja pyörimme sielläkin muutamaan otteeseen. Yhtenä päivänä kävimme Hollywoodissa katselemassa Walk of Fame -tähtikatua. Se riitti meille Los Angelesin näkemiseksi, koska kaupunki ei ole meidän mielestämme kovin miellyttävä. Kaupunki on niin iso, että rannalta keskustaan meno kestää lähes kaksi tuntia bussilla. Autolla ajaminen on myös melko stressaavaa, koska liikennettä on luonnollisesti paljon. Los Angeles on muutenkin enemmän kaupunki, jonne ihmiset muuttavat luomaan uraansa, eikä siellä ole juuri mitään turistinähtävyyksiä. Hollywood, ranta ja julkkisten kodit ovat tärkeimmät nähtävyydet. Pidimme ajastamme rannalla, vaikka rannat olivatkin täynnä todella outoja ihmisiä. Cole ja Carley viettivät kanssamme paljon aikaa ja hauskinta oli heidän kanssaan hengailu, ihan missä vain olimmekaan. Eräänä iltana menimme kaikki porukalla Malibuun rannalle pystyttämään kokon ja paistoimme vaahtokarkkeja ja uimme kuunvalossa valtameressä. Viimeisenä iltanamme ennen lentokentälle lähtöä Cole ja Carley veivät meidät vielä Griffith Parkin observatoriolle katsomaan kaunista kaupunkimaisemaa ja auringonlaskua. Menimme myös syömään hyvää pizzaa Joshin työpaikalle ja sitten he veivät meidät kentälle. Tuntui kuin he olisivat olleet ystäviämme jo kauan aikaa, ja se on tässä reissussa ollut kaikista mahtavinta: tutustumme samanhenkisiin ihmisiin, joiden kanssa vietämme aikaa ja ystävystymme! Meillä on jäänyt erityisen lämpimät muistot Los Angelesin ystävistämme ja toivomme todella, että tapaamme heidät joskus uudelleen :).
