Tere!

New York, New York. Lähdimme Montrealista kukonlaulun aikaan Greyhound-bussilla kohti Yhdysvaltain rajaa ja New York Cityä. Rajalla oli jännät paikat, kun bussimatkustajille tehtiin rajatarkastus ja bussit tutkittiin läpikotaisin kaikenlaisten vaarallisten räkäpapereiden ja banaaninkuorten varalta. Rajavartijat olivat kaikki vakavia tyyppejä, jotka kyselivät tiukasti, miksi ihmeessä haluamme mennä Yhdysvaltoihin. Olimme ostaneet netistä ESTA-viisumit jo aiemmin, mutta ilmeisesti ESTA kelpaa vain lentomatkustamiseen. Jouduimme siis ostamaan uudet viisumit bussimatkaa varten, mutta hinta oli vaivaiset 6 taalaa. Muuten rajatarkastus sujui hyvin, paitsi Helena koki suuren vääryyden, kun hänen kaksi kiellettyä hedelmäänsä eli kaksi omenaa oli viety repusta tarkastuksen yhteydessä. Muistoksi jäi vain vartijoiden jättämä viesti kielletyn tuotteen takavarikoimisesta. Laura oli onnistunut piilottamaan omat omenansa, koska niitä ei ollut viety. Omenoiden kanssa on jotain hämminkiä täällä Pohjois-Amerikassa, koska Torontoon saapuessamme omenat piti heittää roskiin, mutta banaanit olivat ok. Sillä kerralla Lauran piti luopua omenoistaan, mutta Helena sai pitää ne. Outoa.

Saavuimme New Yorkiin maanantai-iltapäivänä kahdeksan tunnin bussimatkan jälkeen. Ilma oli hikinen, mutta onneksi metroissa on ilmastointi (Montrealissa ei ollut)! Suunnistimme kantamustemme kanssa Washington Heightsin kaupunginosaan Manhattanin pohjoisosaan, missä Airbnb-yöpaikkamme sijaitsi. Airbnb on siis nettisivusto, jossa ihmiset vuokraavat vuoteen tai kokonaisen huoneen omasta kodistaan. Tämä on huomattavasti halvempi vaihtoehto New Yorkissa kuin hotelli, sillä hotelliyö voi maksaa helposti satoja taaloja. Emme etsineet sohvasurffauspaikkaa tällä kertaa, sillä New York on niin iso ja suosittu, että surffi-isännät eivät helposti ota ketään koteihinsa ilmaiseksi. Yöpaikkamme New Yorkissa oli mahtava! Asuimme kolmen nuoren aikuisen kimppakämpässä olohuoneessa ja kerkesimme tutustua isäntiimme hyvin muutamassa päivässä. Kaksi heistä oli musikaalitanssijoita ja -näyttelijöitä, ja he olivat todella energisiä ja hauskoja ihmisiä. Vietimme illat heidän kanssaan jutellen kaikenlaisista asioista maan ja taivaan välillä, ja he auttoivat meitä turistikohteiden löytämisessä. Saimme heidät myös innostumaan Suomesta ja toivottavasti he joskus tulevat käymään! Maksoimme yöpaikasta noin 30 taalaa per yö per henkilö. New York oli reissumme ensimmäinen paikka, jossa maksoimme yöpymisestä.

 

Hiki!

Ensimmäisenä iltana suuntasimme heti Times Squarelle katsomaan aukiota ympäröiviä valotauluja. Paikalla oli ihan järjettömästi turisteja. Times Squarea ympäröi lukemattomat teatterit, joissa esitetään Broadway-musikaaleja. Aukio on myös täynnä kaikenlaisia kauppoja, kuten M&M's-karkkikauppa, suuri Toys R Us -lelukauppa ja vaatekauppoja. Näkymät olivat hienot, mutta ihmisiä oli kyllä vähän liikaa.

Times Square

Seuraavana päivänä menimme aamulla takaisin Times Squarelle, sillä halusimme ostaa liput Broadway-musikaaliin. Joissain näytöksissä saman päivän esityksiin voi saada lippuja aamukymmeneltä ja joissain järjestetään lippuarvonta 2,5 tuntia ennen näytöstä. Yritimme päästä Aladdin-musikaaliin arvonnan kautta, mutta onni ei osunut tällä kertaa meihin. Kävimme myös Sohossa (emme kyllä kierrelleet siellä kauaa, emmekä osaa suositella sieltä mitään), kiinalaiskorttelissa syömässä ja Manhattanin eteläkärjessä bisnesalueella. Kävelimme ensin Brooklyn Bridgellä, joka oli hieno, mutta polttavan kuuma yli 30 asteen lämmössä. Kävelimme sitten World Trade Center -muistomerkkialueelle, jossa oli museo ja kaksi suurta vesiallasta entisten pilvenpiirtäjien paikalla. Altaita reunustivat kaikkien terrori-iskujen uhrien nimet. Paikalle ollaan rakentamassa Ground Zero -muistomerkkiä, mutta sen valmistumisesta ei ollut tarkkaa tietoa. Alueella vallitsi surullinen hiljaisuus, kun turistit kiertelivät altaiden ympärillä muistellen 14 vuoden takaisia tapahtumia. Jatkoimme sieltä vielä eteläkärkeen puistoon, josta näki kaukana häämöttävän Vapaudenpatsaan. Lauttamatkat ovat melko kalliita, eikä patsaalle enää edes pääse, joten emme menneet katsomaan sitä lähempää.

Noin iltakuuden maissa päätimme mennä kuuluisaan The Metropolitan Museum of Art -museoon eli The Metiin, mutta monet museot menevätkin kiinni klo 17.30.  The Met on kutakuinkin samankaltainen kuin Louvre Pariisissa tai British Museum Lontoossa eli sieltä löytyy taidetta ja muinaisia esineitä joka puolelta maailmaa. Palasimme sinne viimeisenä päivänämme, jolloin oli sopivasti sadepäivä. Noh, koska emme päässeet museoon ensimmäisellä yrityksellä, päätimme sitten tutustua vieressä olevaan Central Parkiin eli New Yorkin keskellä olevaan suureen keskuspuistoon. Ihastelimme siellä kilpikonnalampea, jossa uiskenteli oikeita kilpikonnia joka puolella :). Lammen reunalla sijaitsi hieno Belvederen linna, josta näki auringonlaskun Manhattanin yllä.

Central Park & Turtle Pond

Kolmantena päivänä menimme jälleen kerran Times Squarelle aamulla, mutta tällä kertaa jonottamaan Finding Neverland -musikaaliin myytäviä halpoja lippuja. Lipputiski aukesi klo 10 ja saimme sieltä liput saman illan näytökseen vain 37 taalalla! Kyseessä oli siis aito ja oikea Broadway-musikaali, jossa esiintyi myös Glee-tv-sarjasta tuttu Matthew Morrison. Pääsimme toiselle riville, joten näimme todella hyvin kaikki näyttelijöiden liikkeet ja ilmeet. Kannattaa ehdottomasti käydä katsomassa Broadwaylla jokin musikaali, sillä liput eivät välttämättä ole kovin kalliit ja esitykset ovat uskomattoman hienosti tehtyjä ja toteutettuja! Esityksen jälkeen lähdimme ulos teatterista ja saimme sattumoisin napattua yhteiskuvan Matthew Morrisonin kanssa! Sillä hetkellä oli vaikeaa uskoa, että tapasimme oikeasti ihmisen, jonka on nähnyt televisiossa ja elokuvissa ja jonka maailma on niin erilainen meidän pieneen suomalaiseen elämäämme verrattuna.

Ennen musikaalia kävimme katsomassa Empire State Buildingia ulkoa päin, mutta emme menneet ylös torniin katselemaan maisemia. Sisäänpääsy olisi maksanut 32 dollaria, ja meillä oli parempi idea maisemien näkemiseen. Empire State Buildingin vieressä on ilmeisesti maailman suurin tavaratalo, Macy's, jossa on 10 kerrosta täynnä kalliita vaatteita ja tavaroita. Löytyi sieltä kyllä myös mäkkäri eli ei pelkkä rikkaiden paikka... Menimme sitten käymään Museum of Natural History -luonnontiedemuseossa, mutta ehdimme nähdä vain dinosauruskerroksen, sillä täytyi lähteä takaisin kämpälle siistiytymään iltaa varten. Olimme nimittäin menossa Rockefeller Centerin kattoterassille erääseen baariin nimeltä Rainbow Room, 65 bar. Sinne voi mennä siistit vaatteet päällä aivan ilmaiseksi, juoda vaikka kaljaa tai syödä jälkiruokaa ja samalla ihastella maisemia. Viini maksaa noin 18 dollaria ja jälkiruoka 9 dollaria (todella hyvää!) Baarista näkee itse asiassa paremmin jopa puolelle kuin Empire State Buildingista, koska baari sijaitsee aivan Central Parkin vieressä eli melko keskellä kaikkea. Menimme sinne yhdessä Lauran intialaisen tutun, Sahilin, kanssa. Hänkin oli viisi vuotta sitten Ranskassa vaihto-oppilaana ja nyt hän asuu New Yorkissa. Oli hauskaa mennä yhdessä, tavata pitkästä aikaa ja ihastella maisemia. Hieno päivä siis!

Viimeisenä päivänä kävimme vähän ostoksilla NHL-kaupassa ja Apple Storessa 5th Avenuella (erittäin rikas ja kallis katu Central Parkin reunalla). Pääsimme The Metiin vihdoinkin ja kiertelimme siellä muutaman tunnin ajan. Niin, museot ovat myös erittäin halpoja New Yorkissa, jos osaa lukea hinnastoa oikein! Museot toimivat periaatteessa lahjoituksilla ja suosittelevat 25 taalan museomaksua lahjoituksena. Hinnastossa tosin lukee, että summa ei ole pakollinen ja käytännössä voi maksaa haluamansa hinnan kassalla. Me maksoimme sekä luonnontiedemuseoon että The Metiin yhden dollarin verran per henkilö, joten siinäkin säästi melkoisesti. Museot tekevät paljon rahaa sillä, kun ihmiset maksavat sinisilmäisesti museon toivoman summan. Lipunmyyjät kysyivät, että paljonko haluamme antaa, joten ei ollut noloa antaa pikkuseteliä lippua vastaan.

The Met.

Museosta päästyämme kello olikin jo sen verran paljon, että menimme takaisin kämpälle, otimme tavaramme, sanoimme heipat ihanille isännillemme ja lähdimme metroseikkailulle Queensin lähiöön JFK:n lentokentän lähelle. Yövyimme lentokenttähotellissa viimeisen yömme, sillä seuraavana aamuna lento Denveriin lähti aikaisin aamulla ja matka kentälle olisi kestänyt kaksi tuntia Manhattanilta. Lähdimme rinkkoinemme juuri ruuhka-ajan tuntumassa ja olo oli melko tiivis metrojen ollessa täynnä ihmisiä. Matkasimme kahdella eri metrolla yli tunnin ajan, minkä jälkeen vaihdoimme Jamaica-nimisellä alueella paikalliseen bussiin, joka vei meidät lähemmäs hotellia. Olimme kuulleet Jamaican olevan syrjäinen lähiö, eikä kovin turvallinen paikka pimeän tullen, joten vähän pelotti kyllä liikkua siellä nuorina tyttöinä iltakahdeksalta. Bussi ei tosin mennytkään hotellin lähelle, vaan ilmoitti päätepysäkin olevan liian aikaisin, joten kävelimme loput. Selvisimme kuitenkin urheasti perille ja pääsimme mukavaan hotellihuoneeseen, jossa oli suuri kingsize-vuode ja kaapelitelevisio ainakin miljoonalla kanavalla varustettuna :D. Hotellihuone maksoi noin 100 taalaa, mutta kuulemma se oli jopa niinkin syrjäiselle alueelle kohtuullinen hinta.

New York oli hieno ja hyvin erilainen kokemus alkumatkaan verrattuna! Suurkaupungin alueella saattaa liikkua jopa 12 miljoonaa ihmistä normaalina työpäivänä ja viikonloppuisin varmasti enemmänkin, kun turistit tulevat. Ihmisvilinää oli välillä vähän liiaksikin, mutta olo ei tuntunut turvattomalta juuri ollenkaan. New Yorkissa pyörii paljon poliiseja ja ihmiset metroissa tuntuvat arvostavan toisten yksityisyyttä. Kunhan ei esiinny aivan stereotyyppisenä turistina (New York -lippis päässä, vyölaukku lanteilla, kartta auki ja katse korkeissa rakennuksissa), niin pärjää hyvin. Rahat kannattaa pitää kyllä paidan tai housujen alla rahavöissä ja repusta kannattaa pitää hyvä huoli kaiken varalta. Maksoimme lähes kaiken käteisellä, sillä olimme kuulleet, että luottokorttien kopiointi on yleistynyt. Toisaalta jos seuraa nettipankkia tasaisin väliajoin, voi nopeasti huomata luottokorttivarkauden ja ilmoittaa pankkiin siitä.

Tässä oli kokemuksemme New Yorkista! Seuraavaksi suuntaamme keskelle Yhdysvaltoja ja hyvin erilaisiin maisemiin... ;)

New York New York!

Finally NYC! We left from Montreal towards the legendary Big Apple with a Greyhound bus, and it took around 8 hours. After a couple of hours in the bus we arrived at the border. The border control was quite intimidating as the officers were really serious and authoritive. Everyone had to leave from the bus and leave all but travel documents, money and cellphone in the bus. In the end we only had to answer a couple of questions and show our passports, but the vibe was tense. Also we had already bought ESTA-visas for the States but apparently it's only valid for flying, so we had to buy another visa from the border but luckily it was "just" 6 dollars. At least we didn't have to fill a form as we had already filled it for ESTA. In the mean-time in the bus the officers had checked all the luggages, and they had confiscated Helena's apples (!!?) She felt so violated as she only found that out at the stop in Albany that her apples were missing. They had left a small message though but that she only found from her bag in the evening so it was a question mark, why they had taken them! But yeah, apparently fruits with seeds and etc. are unauthorized. Laura was lucky though as she had "hidden" the apples so well (in a black plactic bag in her daybag) that she could keep them...And in Montreal at the airport Helena could keep her apples at customs but Laura had to throw them away...weird.

Anyways after the whole apple-ordeal we at last got to the big city! The air was so hot and damp but luckily there's AC in the subways (there was none in Montreal)! We had a booked an AirBnB apartment from Washington Heights, that's in the north of Manhattan. AirBnB is a website where locals rent their apartments, extra-rooms or livingrooms for a cheaper price than hotels. So we got a nice place to go for three nights in New York City. We didn't even try Couchsurfing as New York is so popular and touristy that the hosts don't take anyone easily into their homes for free. But our AirBnB place was awesome! Hands down some of the most vivacious and fun AirBnB hosts ever! We were in a flat of three roommates and we had beds in their livingroom. All three were so nice but we didn't get to know the third one so well, the two others who we got to chat with more were musical actors and they were so great! After our long days of visiting New York, we spent some time in the evenings with them talking about everything and they helped us with everything we needed to know of the city. We also got them excited of Finland so we hope they'll come by some day ;) We paid around 30 bucks per night per person (cheaper and more interesting than a hotel) and it was our first city so far where we paid for the nights. 

The first night we headed straight for Times Square to see what's the fuss all about. We saw of course all these huge screens full of different advertisements for Broadway musicals, electronics and so much more. There were so many people there and probably 90% of them were tourists. Around the square you have the actual theaters for the  musicals and huge shops like the M&M's candy store and Toys R Us. The place was really cool but it was loaded with people.

The next day in the morning we went back to Times Square because we wanted to buy tickets for a Broadway musical. To some shows you can buy rush tickets in the morning when the box offices open and to some they arrange lotteries 2,5 hours before the beginning of the show. We tried for the rush tickets that morning for Finding Neverland but we were a late (we didn't really try so hard) and for Aladdin we tried the lottery, but we didn't have luck that day. The same day we also went to Soho (we didn't stay there long as we can't actually buy a lot of stuff), we ate at Chinatown and walked around the business district. Afterwe went to the Brooklyn Bridge which was really great but super hot as the sun was shining straight above it. We then walked to the World Trade Center memorial area, where there was a museum and two large pools (south and north) where the towers used to be. The names of all the victims of 9/11 decorated the pools borders.  They are also building a Ground Zero -monument in the area but the constructions were still on-going. The atmosphere was a sad silence as people walked around the place remembering the day 14 years ago. From there we continued to the south coast to the harbor where you can see the Statue of Liberty from afar. The ferries that go near it and to Ellis Island are pretty expensive and you can't even get to go to the statue, so we were happy to just see it from the harbor.

Around 6 pm we decided to go to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) but apparently many of the museums in New York closes at 5.30 pm (just so you know). The Met is pretty much the same kind as Louvre in Paris or The British Museum in London, there's different aged art, paintings and sculptures, from all around the world. We went back there though on our last day, when it was raining so it was better timing anyways. Since we couldn't go to the Met this time, we went walking to the near-by Central Park which is as you know a very central place in the city. We admired there the Turtle Pond with actual turtles swimming everywhere in it, they were so cute :) By the pond you had the Belvedere Castle where you could see the sun setting on Manhattan.

On our third day we went yet again in the morning to Times Square, but this time to really queue for the rush tickets for the musical Finding Neverland. The box office opened at 10 am and then we got our tickets for the evening show for only 37 dollars! This was a real Broadway musical starring Matthew Morrison who's known for the TV-series Glee. We got second road places so we saw everything really close, the actors' expressions and movements, and the sets. It's definitely worth going to see a Broadway musical, because the shows are phenomenal, amazingly produced and executed, adn as you can see you can find affordable tickets to them. After the show in the evening we left the theater and saw people waiting for the Broadway stars to come out. By some miracle, Matthew Morrison came out first so we got a picture with him and his autograch on our play bill !!! For us it was a really special moment because it was such an unbelievable New York experience to meet someone who has been on television and movies and who's world is completely different from our small Finnish world. It was the cherry on top of the cake.

Before the musical we also went to see the Empire State Building from the outside but we didn't go up there to see the view. The entrance fee was a whopping 32 dollars, and we had a better idea for watching the scenery. Near it was the famous department store Macy's, where there are 10 stories of merchandise. There was also a McDonald's so it wasn't just for the welthy... We also had time to quickly visit The American Museum of Natural History (only the dinosaur floor though) and then we went back to the flat to clean ourselves up for the night. The night was going to be fancy for us as before the musical we were going to Rockefeller Center's rooftop floor called The Rainbow Room and in the bar 65. You can go there for free as long as you are dressed well (business casual), drink something or eat a dessert all the while enjoying the beautiful view. The wine's about 18 dollars and a dessert 9 dollars (really yummy!) You can actually see better around the city from the bar than from the Empire State Building because it's near the Central Park and everything else. We went there with Laura's Indian friend Sahil. They were together in France 5 years ago for their exchange year and now he lives in New York.  It was really fun to go together, to meet again and admire the panoramic view. Such a great day!

The last day we went for a little shopping in the NHL-store and went to see the Apple store on 5th Avenue (a very expensive street near the Park). Finally we got into the Met and we visited it for a couple of hours. Oh and the museums are quite cheap if you look at the admissions fees closely! The museums run mostly on donations and they recommend a 25 dollar admission as a donation. In the admissions it's said that you can pay less and you can practically pay anything you want at the cashier. We paid 1 dollar per person for both the Met and the natural history museum, so it really didn't affect much our budget! The museums make a lot of money with the donations, and there are many who pay the admission fee showed in the museums. The cashiers asked us how much we want to give so it wasn't even embarrassing to give a 1 dollar bill for the ticket.

Out of the museum the time was already so much that we had to get back to the flat. We went to get our stuff and thanked our wonderful hosts for everything. And off we left for a subway adventure to somewhere in Queens near the JFK airport. We stayed our last night at an airport hotel because our flight to Denver the next day was really early and it takes about 2 hours to get to the airport from Manhattan. We left with our backpacks right about rush hour time so we were quite tight in the subway (apologies to everyone suffering next to us and our backpacks). We traveled for more than an hour with 2 different subways , and then we switched to a bus at Jamaica Queens. We were a bit scared in Queens as we had heard that it wasn't the safest place at nightfall (it was 8 pm and we're tourists) but we maanged it and got safely to the hotel. There we had a king-size bed and cable so we were well awarded :D It cost us 100 dollars but apparently even for a remote place it's a reasonable price for NYC.

New York was a beautiful adn very different experience compared to the other cities before! There can be around 12 million people in the Big Apple on a normal weekday and on weekends maybe even more with tourists. The crowd was sometimes overwhelming but you didn't feel in danger or anything at all. There are a lot of policemen in the city and the people in the subways seem to respect your privacy. As long as you don't represent the perfect tourist (a NY hat, a fannypack on your hips, an open map hiding your face and your gaze at the skyscrapers) you'll do fine. It still wise to keep your money inside your shirt or pants in a moneybelt and keep a close look on your bag. We paid almost everything with cash because we had heard that it's very common to get your card copied- Although if you keep an eye on your account (on the internet) often, you will probably notice if someone else is using your card.

Well, here's all we've done during our time in the great city of New York! Next we're heading towards the center of the States and into a whole different environment ;) CIAO !
