Hektisen New Yorkin jälkeen suuntasimme keskelle Yhdysvaltoja Coloradon osavaltioon. Emme oikeastaan käyneet osavaltion pääkaupungissa Denverissä ollenkaan, vaan menimme suoraan bussilla Boulderiin, joka sijaitsee Denverin pohjoispuolella. Boulder on mukava ja rauhallinen kaupunki aivan Kalliovuorten juurella. Boulderissa kuulemma asuu tutkitusti Yhdysvaltain onnellisimmat ja terveimmät ihmiset, joten melko erilainen ympäristö suurkaupungin jälkeen.

Lauran sukulainen Heli oli meitä vastassa Boulderissa ja menimme hänen ja hänen miesystävänsä Tonyn luo viikonlopuksi. Kerkesimme jo perjantai-iltana pyöriä kaupungin viihtyisässä keskustassa ja käydä hyvässä Leaf-nimisessä vegaaniravintolassa syömässä.

Lauantaina saimme taas kokea uuden amerikkalaisen elämyksen: menimme katsomaan amerikkalaista jalkapallopeliä! Vastakkain olivat Coloradon ja Massachusettsin yliopistojoukkueet, jotka olivat kuulemma yhtä huonoja joukkueita. Peliä oli silti jännittävä katsoa, ja taisimme jopa ymmärtää pelin säännötkin suhteellisen nopeasti. Olimme onnettarina taas kerran, sillä Coloradon joukkue ei ollut aiemmin voittanut kovin usein ja tällä kertaa se voitti ylivoimaisesti. Jee!

Pelin jälkeen menimme Helin ja Tonyn entiseen naapurustoon katujuhliin, joihin koko lähitienoo osallistui ja kaikki olivat tehneet ruokaa tai leiponeet kaikenlaista hyvää. Söimme mahat täyteen salaatteja ja brownieta, ja kuuntelimme samalla naapuruston teinien perustamaa jazzbändiä, joka soitti autotallissa. Kävimme vielä ihailemassa maisemia kaupungin ulkopuolella ja sitten suuntasimme illalla elokuviin katsomaan todella vaikuttavaa dokumenttielokuvaa nimeltään Meru. Se kertoo kolmesta miehestä, jotka aikovat kiivetä Himalajalla sijaitsevalle vuorelle ja he ovat kuvanneet elokuvan itse. Kannattaa katsoa, jos siihen on mahdollisuus!

Viimeisenä päivänä ennen Yellowstonen kansallispuistoon lähtöä kävimme aamupäivällä vaeltamassa Brainard Lake -paikassa Boulderin kupeessa. Siellä oli mahtavat maisemat eri järvien yllä, ja aurinko paistoi kauniisti koko päivän. Oli mukavaa päästä kävelemään vuorilla, kun kerran olimme Kalliovuorille asti matkustaneet!

Vaelluksen jälkeen olikin jo aika lähteä Denverin lentokentälle hakemaan vuokra-autoa, ja se kyllä vähän jännitti, kun kumpikaan meistä ei ole koskaan ajanut ulkomailla autoa. Ainakin ajo lentokentältä kotiin ajaminen meni hyvin ja automaattivaihteisella autolla ajaminen olikin yllättävän helppoa.

Seuraavana aamuna lähdimme kohti suurta seikkailua eli Yellowstonen kansallispuistoa. Siitä saatte lukea ihan oman tekstin pian!

After the hectic city that is New York, we headed towards the middle of the States, to Colorado.We didn't really stay in Denver (in the capital of the state where our flight went) but we took the bus straight after landing to Boulder situated north from Denver. Boulder is a nice peaceful town right next to the Rocky Mountains. Statistically the United States' happiest and healthiest people live in Boulder which was a big change of environment after the big city life of NYC.
Laura's relative Heli came to pick us up when we arrived in Boulder and we spent the weekend at her's and her partner's Tony's place. The same night we already got the chance to visit a bit of Boulder's groovy downtown and we also got to eat at a cool vegan restaurant called Leaf. It was a really tasty place and it's very affordable during "happy hour" when there are small dishes at a small price (so you can get 2-3 dishes and get full ;).
On Saturday we got to have another American experience as we went to see an American football game! The game was The Buffaloes (Colorado University) versus The Minute Men (Massachussetts university), and apparently they were both as bad. It was still exciting to follow and we got the hang of it pretty soon (Tony explained us the rules). And once again we worked as lucky charms as CU won hands down the game! (Although Tony did say that it would have been shameful if they didn't...) Still a big YAY!
After the game we went to a putlock block party at the old neighborhood of Heli and Tony. Everyone close by participates and cooks delicious, usually organic food to bring to the putlock. To eat, you donate an amount of money for charity or for a cause and then you get a nametag and the licence to eat ;) We stuffed ourselves with so many different salads and for dessert there were amazing cookies. cakes and brownies (not the magic ones though!). There was also a highschool jazz band that played in the background at a garage and they were quite good! After that we went to see a little of the surroundings and then the scenery outside if town and then left to the movie theater. We saw this incredibly powerful documentary Meru that tells a story of three men wanting to climb this huge peak in the Himalayas. It's a low-budget film as one of the men directed it and filmed it practically himself but the finish is awesome and beats most of the movies you see now in theaters. A must-see one if you have the opportunity!
For our last day in Boulder before heading out to Yellowstone National Park, we went hiking in the morning to Brainard Lake, which is on the side of the city.The views were amazing and the sun shone the whole time upon the forest, the mountains and the lakes. It was so nice to go hiking there as we had come all the way to the Rocky Mountains.
After the hike it was already time to pick up our rental car from the airport of Denver. That made us quite nervous as neither of us had ever driven outside of Europe (even Finland)! The drive from the airport to Boulder went pretty well though and it was quite easy in the end to use the automatic transmission (which is super common in the States).
The next morning it was time for us to move on to our next big adventure called Yellowstone National Park! Of that you can read all about in our next writing!
